TASK : COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE [DOG ADOPTION CAMPAIGN]

Community Service Initiative (CSI) is a group task. For this project, we were required to choose an organization and involve ourselves in servicing the community. This service learning module is basically using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among all of us for the community, environment and the world as a whole. Besides, it also helps to develop our sense of personal and social responsibility. In order to complete the task, firstly we were required to choose an organization to see what their needs are and how we can help them up by fulfilling their needs. Thus, as a group, we chose the dog adoption campaign. Before we start the dog adoption campaign, we were required to attend two workshops in Lost Animal Souls Shelter (LASS); a dog shelter.

 

Lost Animal Souls Shelter (LASS) is located at Kuala Selangor. The objective of having the workshop is to let us get closer to the dogs and learn how to communicate and take care of them. Furthermore, it is a 2 hours’ workshop where we were there to help to clean the shelter, wash up the dogs, feed them and play with them. Throughout the 2 hours session, I find it is useful and meaningful as I tend to overcome my phobia towards dogs and learnt how to take care of them in an appropriate way and communicate with them.  

 

After attending the workshop, we had a discussion and come up with solutions to fulfill the needs met. Before that, we come up with a goal and target in order to start the campaign. The whole idea of this campaign is to raise awareness to the community by telling them that even a stray dog is lovely and share with them the basic responsibilities ones should have towards their pet. Then, we divided the group into 4 subgroups and each group is responsible at the chosen task. For instance, the 4 task is rebranding, postcard making, raising awareness in pet shop and walking the dogs in Desa Park City.  The task that I chose is raising awareness in a pet shop. There are 3 people in my group. For this task, we were required to bring the dog that is ready to be adopted to that particular pet shop found earlier and we promote the campaign to the community around the area.

 

Within the day in the pet shop, we managed to interview owner of the pet shop. Through this task, I find that this community service is meaningful where we tend to bring awareness to the public about adopting a dog is better than buying one and what important is we tend to know how the public thinks about dog adoption. Besides promoting the campaign we also sell postcards to raise fund for the dog shelter in order to help them up with their monthly expenses spend for all the dogs.

 

Through this project, I am able to develop relevant communication skills for collaborative work with the community. Besides, I am also able to analyze how we should approach a problems and how to solve them scientifically. Lastly, have a strong sense of social responsibility and be able to work effectively as a team.
