PROJECT 1 : "SPACE OUT - THE MATERIAL CUBE"

Project 1 of this module is an individual task where we were required to design and build two cubes in both different materials which is a paper cube and wooden cube. Both the cube have to be defined in a volume of 12"x12"x12" inch space. Besides, the cube should be produced with one material and a fastening system such as glue, nails, screw or rope. For the final submission of this project, we were required to produced a full scale model and an A2 board which consists of plan, section and elevation in the scale of 1:50.

Through project 1, I have a better understanding on building making in relation to materials, design considerations of material according to their properties and how the intrinsic forms, limitations and boudaries of a material factor in a design process. Furthermore, I am able to express a material within its contextual application.

PROJECT 2 : " MATERIALITY OF SPACE: AN EXPERIENTIAL EXPLORATION"

Project 2 was divided into two task which is group and individual task where it introduce us to various types of material that are applied in existing buildings locally in response to local contexts such as climate, concept, aesthetics, structure, occupancy and environmental issues. Furthermore, emphasis is given to identification and understanding the effects of material, chemical and physical properties.

TASK A (GROUP) :

Project 2 task A is a group task where we were required to form a group of 5 person. In group of 5, we were to select a commercial or residential building which allow us to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module. In order to get information of the building, my group members and I started off by choosing the building we are going to analyse. The building we chose is Jibby & Co. For task A, we were required to produce three A2 board which includes the mood board, board which consists of the identification of materials and board that explain the application of materials of the particular building we chose.

Through this project, I have learnt how to identify various types of building material, understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building and understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept and climate.

TASK B (INDIVIDUAL) :

Project 2 task B is an individual task where we were required to select an old shophouse around Kuala Lumpur area. I chose Chong Kok Kopitiam which was located in Klang town as the shophouse for my analysis. This project is about the sense of materiality which it was an experiential analysis of material and space. For this task, we were required to produce one A2 board that consists of all the information we get from design intention & concept, space analysis and diagrams that shows or explain the spatial qualities of the particular shophouses.

Through this task, I have a better understanding on the application of materials used as finish and structural material. Different material used in different building gives us different feeling. Even the spatial qualities of a building will be affected by different building materials.
