PROJECT 1 :  APPLICATION OF BUILDING SERVICES

Project 1 is an individual task where we were required to demonstrate our understanding of building services by proposing and designing the most appropriate systems for the building which include electrical supply system, cold water and hot water supply system, sewerage and sanitary system and drainage system. In order for us to propose and design those services stated above, we have to use our studio 2 final project that we have done in semester 2. With that, we were required to produce appropriate drawings and diagrams which include specifications, symbols, legends, images and texts to describe the planning and installation of all the building services. Furthermore, we were also required to include specific clauses from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL) or other relevant Acts, Laws or guidelines which relate to the proposed systems into our presentation board.

For this project, the submission requirement is that we individually, have to produce maximum of 3 A2 size presentation board consists of plans showing the proposed building services systems and components, descriptions of planning and installation, images of all building services components and the Acts, Laws or guidelines which related to the proposed systems.

Through this project, I can identify information that is related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, mechanical air-conditioning, fire-safety and vertical transportation system. Besides, I am able to describe the planning and installation of building services within the total design and construction process. Last but not least, I am able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical considerations.

PROJECT 2 :  CASE STUDY & DOCUMENTATION OF BUILDING SERVICES SYSTEMS

Project 2 is a group and individual task where we were required form a group of 6 people. My group members are Ong Huey Fen, Leong Hui Yi, Adrian Seow Chen Wah, Pua Kai Jing and Ho Tze Hooi. For this project, we were required to choose a building of 5- storeys high which can be either public or commercial buildings. In a group of 6, we chose Kuala Lumpur Performing Art Center (KLPac) as our building to conduct the case study. After choosing a building, we were required to perform a thorough study and analysis of the following services systems associated to the building. Those services systems are mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, fire protection system (active and passive fire protection system) and lastly mechanical transportation system.

The submission requirement for this project is that in a group of 6, we have to identify all the required building services components installed in the building and perform a thorough study on all the services systems for example mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, fire protection system and mechanical transportation. Then, we have to obtain estimated dimensions and sizes of the spaces required for all the equipment and plant rooms identified and provide a brief explanation on how the building services components function. Lastly, we have to summarize the systems in diagrammatic form. With that, we were required to compile all the information into an A4 bound report together with 2 A2 size presentation board which summarize how the systems work in KLPac which is our chosen building.

Through this project, I am able to identify and have a better understanding on the relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning, mechanical transportation system as well as the fire protection system. Besides, I also understand how each building services functions including the connections and position of different parts equipment and able to explain the principles and systems as well as space implications and regulations related to different building services.
