PROJECT 1: INDUSTRIALISED BUILDING SYSTEM

Project 1 of this module is a group work where we were given a group that consists of 6 members. For this project, we were required to produced a model of  the selected apartment in appropriate scale that fit into an A2- sized base and come up with a 3 to 5 minutes video presentation of the model making process including fbrication of components as well as the embodied energy calculation. In order to complete the assignment, firstly, we were required to perform a study on a building preferably an apartment, which was constructed fully or partially using IBS method and identify all the IBS components used including appropriate sizes. Then, design either one or two types of apartment units which size should not exceed 100 square meters that consists of a living hall, a dining area, three bedrooms and two toilets and should incorporate the whole design mainly with IBS components such as precast wall, hollow core slab, precast staircase, toilet pod or prefabricated timber roof truss. The design has to be made into three levels and for the physical model, we were encouraged to cut one side into half to show the cross section. Moreover, we were also told to construct the IBS components of the model individually then joint all of them together in the actual way as how an IBS building is constructed. Lastly, all the process including fabrication of components and sequence of construction in the production of the model should be included in the video and a number of blow-up connection details of different parts of the model should also be produced.

Through this project, I can easily identify most of the IBS components and also be able to explain a set of architectural and structural documentation. In addition, I am able and have a better usdertanding of how IBS components is join together and able to analyse and document construction methods and materials.

PROJECT 2: CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS

PART A:  Alternative Design Scheme

Project 2A of this module is an individual work where we were required to produced an A3 sized bound report of the precedent studies, analysis of the construction systems and two alternatives facade design schemes for the current studio design project. In order for us to produced a report of what is stated above, at first we need to conduct some precedent studies of unique construction systems which is roof, structural and facades system that could be applied in our current design project. Then, we were required to conduct a thorough studies of all the selected systems in order to answer the following questions :

i) What is the type of construction system used?

ii) What is/are the material(s) used in the system?

iii) How is the system constructed? (i.e. detailing)

iv) What is/are the advantage(s) of the system?

v) What is/are the disadvantage(s) of the system?

vi) Why did you choose the system considering the advantages and disadvantages of it?

Lastly, using the similar systems as chosen for the case studies, we were told to produced two alternatives facade design schemes for the current studio design project and each design scheme that we come up with, should include only the front and the rear facades in scale 1:100 together with the neigbouring buildings.

PART B: SECTIONAL PERSPECTIVES

Project 2B of this module is an individual work where we were required to produced an A3 sized bound report of the precedent studies, analysis of the construction systems and two alternatives facade design schemes for the current studio design project and fully annotated detail sectional perspective drawing of two interesting spaces, one on the ground floor and one on the top floor accompanied by key plans to indicate the location of the spaces. In order for us to produced a report of what is stated above, at first we need to produced a detail sectional perspective drawing of two interesting spaces od our design project which consists of a room on the ground floor and a room on the top floor. Furthermore, the sectional perspective of the room on the ground floor should show the connections between the foundations, ground floor slab, façade, structures and the upper floor slab.. Whereas on the top floor the sectional perspective should highlight the connections between the floor slab, structures, façade, and the roof. Lastly, all the drawings were required to be produced in scale 1: 50 to 1: 30.

Through this project, I am able to analyse and document construction methods and materials and able to evaluate existing construction systems and detailings of the selected case studies. Besides, I am also able to generate alternatives construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings. Latly, I have also get used to know more unique and new construction method of roof systems, structural systems and facade systems.
